As we usher our way through the vibrant month of May, our greenhouses really do spring into life. For so many of us the growing season didn’t get off to the best start with what felt like never ending cold, rainy days. Hopefully all those grueling days of gardening against the elements will be worthwhile as things start to bloom and the promise of a delicious harvest feels within reach.
May really feels like a transitional month, with spring in full swing and summer just around the corner. The increasing daylight and milder temperatures create an ideal environment for a wide range of plants. In your greenhouse, this translates to faster growth and a flourishing garden. Your greenhouse, with its controlled environment, can amplify these natural advantages, helping you achieve fantastic results.
By now, many of your seedlings should be ready to move to larger pots or directly into the greenhouse beds. Transplanting is a critical step to ensure that your plants have enough space to develop strong roots and grow robustly.
- Transplant your tomato seedlings when they have at least two sets of true leaves. Plant them deep, burying a significant portion of the stem to encourage a strong root system.
- Peppers can be transplanted when they are about 6-8 inches tall. Ensure the nights are consistently warm to avoid transplant shock.
- Cucumbers can be moved to their final spot when they have 3-4 true leaves. Provide plenty of space for them to climb and spread.
Now is a great time to directly sow seeds for fast-growing crops. Lettuce, radishes, and herbs can be sown now, providing you with quick rewards. Stagger your sowing every couple of weeks to maintain a continuous harvest.
As the days get warmer, managing the temperature in your greenhouse becomes crucial. Ventilation is key to preventing overheating and ensuring healthy plant growth. Open vents and doors during the day to allow fresh air in and excess heat to escape. Consider installing shade cloths if the sunlight becomes too intense.
With warmer weather, your plants will need more water. Water early in the morning to allow the foliage to dry out during the day, reducing the risk of fungal diseases. Keep the soil consistently moist but avoid waterlogging.
As you enjoy the growth in May, start planning for the summer months. Think about what you want to harvest and the care your plants will need as the weather continues to be warm. Staying ahead with your planning will help ensure a bountiful and healthy greenhouse garden throughout the season.
Happy growing and harvesting!
