April, what a crazy month you have been so far! We fully expected to be met with unpredictable showers, but tornadoes, torrential rain, snow blizzards and freezing hail storms seems a little harsh for the beginning of spring! We really are experiencing all seasons most days at the moment, making daily planning, especially gardening, extremely challenging! Weather extremities aside, the days are getting longer and the lighter evenings really are a true tonic. Hopefully May will grace us with some warmth and lift our spirits with some much needed Vitamin D and our greenhouses will begin to explode with life too!
If your growing season didn’t get off to the best start, do not fear, as luckily with a greenhouse there is no time limit because you can grow all year round. April is prime time for starting seeds in the greenhouse. Whether you’re growing vegetables, flowers or herbs, now is the perfect opportunity to sow seeds directly into trays or pots. Make sure to provide adequate warmth and moisture for germination and keep an eye on your seedlings as they emerge.
If you started seeds earlier in the year then now is the time to transplant your seedlings into larger containers or directly into the ground. Check the root systems of your seedlings and transplant them carefully, making sure to provide ample space for growth.
Depending on what you’re growing, April may bring the first harvests of the season. Whether it’s tender asparagus, crisp lettuces, juicy strawberries or fragrant herbs, savour the fruits of your labour and enjoy the taste of freshly picked produce; there really is no better taste!
So wherever you may be on your gardening journey right now, we would like to wish you a happy April… happy sowing, happy growing and happy eating!
